Band : Cosmic Trip Machine Album Title : Vampyros Roussos Label : Self Release Distributor : Clearspot Release Date : 2009 Review : CD There’s an island where time moves backwards and then flows, there are mountains to climb. Welcome to Vampyros Roussos, a rock opera and the soundtrack of an imaginary movie about Jimmy, a young man running away from Fuzzy, a police inspector, and his partner directed by Will and Majnun, a psychedelic folk duo from Belgium. Though very short tracks, eightteen in total,Vampyros Roussos has a strong jam vibe to it with many rich and varied tracks including some nice spacey instrumental tracks such as “White lodge”, “Zorba goes to hell” and “Psychedelic twist” and some really tripped out moments of madness, the excellent swinging Funkadelic-like “It feels good”, the Purple-rockin’ “Evil preacher” and more 'acoustic' edged tracks such as “Forest/Lost island” which amounts to an eclectic but very interesting album that gets better every time you listen to it. All songs on this album are instrumentally very strong and seem to go out of their way to find counter rhythms rather than go for the obvious, both instrumentally and vocally. The duo Will and Majnun makes interesting use of a variety of instruments including tabla, acoustic and electric guitar, flute, keyboards, sitar, djembe and some cool sampling. Hang on tight for an album full of surprises that takes in space rock, funk, soul, folk, Santana, tripped out pop, a slice of Gong/Aphrodites Child inspired chaos and quite a few steps close to those fantanstic 70s psych soundtracks such as Vampyros Lesbos, Holy Mountain, Beyond the Valley of Dolls, The Wicker Man, More, Suspiria… The more I listen, the more it impresses me. Catch this unique project at Sojo (Leuven) at February 27th 2010 together with Mammoeten op Kousevoeten. 92/100 COSMIC TRIP MACHINE — Vampyros Roussos, Concreteweb |
